Year in Review Meme #Whatever
Words are being very, very hard for me today, but I'm actually doing this in a timely fashion for once ...
1. What did you do in 2017 that you'd never done before?
Brought home a neurotic puppy in need of behavioral rehab. He has a lot of emotional and training needs, but right now he's sleeping next to me as the cold has him bored to horrible dog tears, okay?! His daycare is closed, he can't play outside, we can't go anywhere or do anything fun ...
I think that might actually be it. It was a really dull unremarkable year otherwise.
OH, and had two major surgeries in two months? Plus I'd never had my gallbladder removed before. That's something you really can only do once.
2. What goals do you have for 2018?
Finish my MPH, get a job in the NoVA/DC/Rockville, MD area and move in with friends (with the dog and the husband).
3. How did you spend New Year 2017?
I ... still don't remember? I honestly can't remember last December at all. Big blank. I think we probably did nothing again and maybe were asleep. This year I have hopes to be awake for what used to be my favorite holiday for the first time in several years, but the weather is so inhospitable we still likely won't do anything at all.
4. How will you spend it for 2018?
Hopefully awake.
5. How much traveling did you do in 2017?
Oh wow, I actually traveled a lot though it seems like so long ago now! I went on a cruise in February with nine of my favorite people (the girls' trip, as the husbands and kids and pets all stayed behind) and I guess that was also something I'd never done before! Again, my brain is swiss cheese right now. I only really traveled the one time but I went to Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, Barbados, St. Maarten and St. Thomas. All in ten really fantastic days. The "direct" flight back also had a surprise trip to Baltimore for refueling (and if you count layovers, I was also in Miami for about an hour).
6. What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?
Well let's look at last year: Career and academic stability, rather than constant nerves about my status. To not feel like I'm constantly wrung out and exhausted. A dog, but I don't think this one is happening. :(
The two I wasn't expecting to have happen — academic stability and the dog — those DID happen. The other two, not so much. Career stability is half lacking because I hate my job and am being unfairly paid, so at least some of it is on me. Academic stability right now is also suffering because my career mentor/outside thesis advisor hasn't answered my emails since mid-November and I might just show up at his office at some point ...
Financial safety is the one I'm going to pick here, though. I'm not sure I've had that in my entire adult life, though we came close for a few months there.
7. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Puppy~
8. What was your biggest learning experience?
I'm not even sure. It might just be that my depressed brain is very blah right now, but it was also just really a blah year most of the time?
9. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Osteomyelitis! Acute on chronic cholecystitis! Another TIA! 2017 was kind of balls when it comes to getting sick.
10. What was the best thing you got, bought or pilfered?
Does ... does the puppy count? No? Probably the red fuzzy hat then.
11. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Dr. Choi, champion observer.
12. Where did most of your money go?
The dog, the MTA, food, textbooks. Not in that order.
13. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I'm guessing the cruise. I mean, I know I was really excited, that's just so far away. And bringing the dog home. And this semester being over, considering how much of a shit show it was, but that was more resigned, hopeful exhaustion.
14. What song will always remind you of 2017?
Smallpools' "Lovetap" played a lot. There's no real association, just "I listened to this frequently."
15. Did you start any new hobbies?
What is time?
16. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Creative output that was worth a damn.
17. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Waiting.
18. How did you spend Christmas?
I don't celebrate it, but like last year, I was at work. It was actually bizarrely boring, considering the 24th was full of interesting cases. I think on the 25th we saw something like 5 patients each and they were all sinus infections.
19. Did you fall in love or stay in love in 2017?
Stayed just about where I was. Am.
20. Discover any new restaurants?
Not that I can think of, actually. I mean, we had never been to Bonefish Grill before but I knew it existed.
21. What were you watching on TV in 2017?
My dog really likes NCIS, so there's been a great rewatch.
22. Any TV you've given up on?
I haven't watched anything new, so it's been hard to give up. :) I still kind of wish I could only watch the parts of SVU that don't have Olivia Benson in them, but that's hard work.
23. Movie experiences of 2017 you'd like to remember?
I did not see a new movie the entire year. The last time I saw a movie in theatres was January of 2016 I think.
24. Any books to talk about?
Lots. I had a friend get me to actually enjoy a sports romance. The best non-fiction of this year was Bad Faith and the most recent fiction I've read that's actually out (also the most recent I worked on that's been released) is Revelations (which is a sequel: the first book is Dragon Storm, and the entire series is actually a sequel to a previous series, but that's not the point right now).
25. New games?
I got the latest Shadowrun Steam game but haven't played it yet.
26. What was your favourite film of this year?
Tbh I don't even know what came out this year.
27. Which celebrity/public figure did you appreciate the most?
Erica Garner. :(
28. What did you want and not get?
Peace.
29. Any new fashion items for you?
Does lip balm count, because I have so, so much more lip balm now that it's become a running joke.
30. Food memories of 2017?
The time the salmon melted, I think. It didn't have to be a good memory.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Twenty-nine. We went to Outback Steakhouse because the bread is good.
32. Who did you miss?
Three years running: My dad? Is this going to be my answer forever? Yes, it is.
33. Who was the best new person you met?
Victoria, my intern-mate.
34. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017.
Always pay attention to when coupons are going to expire.
35. Where do you want to be next year at this time?
Somewhere warmer!
36. Did you enjoy this year?
I didn't ... explicitly hate it, but it also wasn't really enjoyable? It really is just the most impressively meh year I can think back on, with both some big bads and some big goods, but substantially a lot of blah.
