Apparently I never finished 2018's and so it's private
But I seem to be on track for this to be the sixth year I've done this surveymeme; maybe someday I'll even go back and read them.
1. What did you do in 2019 that you'd never done before?
I actually can't think of a single thing, which kind of backs up how this year was just kind of boring and uneventful in general. Except maybe "get gold dragon on silly game," which is a thing I'd never done before? I have no idea, really. I'm sure there's something, but I don't remember it.
WAIT, also "participate in fic exchange." I'd never done that before 2019 Chocolate Box either. I even did a Yuletide treat, which may or may not lead up to me actually participating in Yuletide next year.
2. What goals do you have for 2020?
A promotion to a job that doesn't require as much interfacing with people, with the commensurate pay raise that allows me to move to an apartment that is slightly larger than a closet! Except that this isn't a goal I can really control. This is an external thing. I guess my goal that I have some control over is to publish the medical romance, which also requires finishing the damn thing.
3. How did you spend New Year 2018?
Pretty sure I'd fallen asleep again.
4. How will you spend it for 2019?
I think we're going to be watching movies. Togo and The Man Who Knew Too Little, unless that isn't available in which case it's The Whole Nine Yards. (That would be a pick from each of us, with the requirement that dogs appear somewhere, because Trip can't really pick a movie but he does prefer when there are dogs.)
5. How much traveling did you do in 2019?
There was a 2019 cruise, so I went to Miami, Honduras, Belize, and two places in Mexico: Mahahual and Cozumel. On a work trip two months later I went to Nashville. My next cruise is in 2021; our group does it every other year.
6. What would you like to have in 2020 that you lacked in 2019?
Financial stability, or: less medical debt.
7. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Running the program solo at work for three months while my boss was on maternity leave and not blowing anything up or causing any disasters. I also did not get fired. Or even reprimanded for anything. (My one writeup was months later over something unrelated, fucking payroll fiasco.)
Secondary: met my
getyourwordsout goal.
8. What was your biggest learning experience?
To stay away from payroll when at all possible. No, really, it's that while I can hold people's literal lives in my hands and be fine, people's paychecks freak me out too much.
9. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Hahahahahahahahahahaha. I was in the hospital for my blood pressure THREE TIMES, for a total of ten nights. I still have not paid for it.
10. What was the best thing you got, bought or pilfered?
PLANE TICKETS TO ALASKA FOR THE IDITAROD. That I technically couldn't afford, and may have (totally did) used the majority of our emergency savings on, but Brady gets to see his sister and I get to see his sister AND two of my friends run Iditarod.
11. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My mom's. Strength in adversity.
12. Where did most of your money go?
Rent. My rent is so expensive, you guys. I was hoping I could just link a chart, but my budget software tiers them such that I can't easily demonstrate it on its own. However, I can say that I spent $20,875 on rent!!! And the next most expensive things are dog expenses ($13k) and then food. Keep in mind that I have a joint bank account, but neither of us make particularly great money.
13. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Cruising (early in the year). Medievalfest and seeing BFF Sarah, later in the year. Getting to meet some awesome DW people! Though I was terrified about meeting each and every one of you, because I am a nervous shy wreck who is intimidated by all humans, I believe everyone I met this year is still my friend ...
14. What song will always remind you of 2019?
*checks Spotify most played* "I Love It" by Rob Thomas is apparently the answer to this. (It's always 'songs I heard a lot that year' that have that visceral response.)
15. Did you start any new hobbies?
I went back to playing Furry Paws, which is a virtual dog game.
16. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Creative output. Relaxing.
17. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Waiting.
18. How did you spend Christmas?
I don't celebrate it, but I was ... at home, reading, most of the day, because my job was closed. That was REALLY nice. Just a random Wednesday off, and I have two mandatory weekly meetings on Wednesday that are super stressful for me, so I'll take it. Guess what I get to do tomorrow? :) Except tomorrow I'm going to my mom's to keep her company while she continues to pack up her house, but mostly I'll be sitting and reading while doing that ...
19. Did you fall in love or stay in love in 2019?
Stayed just about where I was.
20. Discover any new restaurants?
Yes, but I just forgot the name of it. Thankfully it's in Seamless: Nikko Hibachi Asian Fusion, the place with the best sashimi I've found in Harlem so far. They also gave me three soups by accident that one time, and I do love soup.
21. What were you watching on TV in 2019?
I came across Mary Kills People, which is really good! I also kept watching New Amsterdam (the greatest public health fantasy ever in a lot of ways, even if I'm not happy about the character death) and the Chicago franchise because I'm trash. But while I can't speak to PD, Med and Fire are both really accurate trash.
22. Any TV you've given up on?
I keep thinking I broke up with a show, and not remembering which ... oh, right, because it was Jessica Jones I got mad at, and S1 is one of my favorite pieces of media, so I basically made myself forget there were a seasons two and three. But since it was also canceled, I didn't really break up with it so much as refuse to finish.
23. Movie experiences of 2019 you'd like to remember?
I did not see a new movie the entire year. I have not seen any movies that have come out since 2016 I don't think. Tonight I hope to watch Togo, which is actually new this year! It came out ten days ago.
24. Any books to talk about?
You should all read the Star Kingdom series by Lindsay Buroker. You should also all read the Rachel Peng series by KB Spangler.
25. New games?
No, because I do not have a Switch. I would sell one of my feet for one, but my feet suck, so I can't get one. I mean, maybe Furry Paws counts, it's a browser sim.
26. What was your favourite film of this year?
Since I've seen absolutely nothing that came out in 2019, I can't really say. There were a lot of movies I MEANT to watch ...
27. Which celebrity/public figure did you appreciate the most?
Elizabeth Warren.
28. What did you want and not get?
Peace.
29. Any new fashion items for you?
My mom got me two beautiful sweaters for Chanukah. They're identical except for being different colors, because I couldn't decide and put both on my wish list and she ... couldn't decide and bought both of them.
30. Food memories of 2019?
This is the year I made a spice cookie that I actually enjoyed eating.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned thirty-one, and I really need to write this stuff down more, because I don't really remember? I assume we had dinner with my mom, since we share a birthday. I vaguely recall that we didn't get to do that until the 27th and so we ended up with multiple cakes, but I don't recollect any details.
32. Who did you miss?
Still my dad.
33. Who was the best new person you met?
Work's new CFO, Jill, is really awesome.
34. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2019.
I really like that 2017's answer was, "Always pay attention to when coupons are going to expire." Similarly this year's is "You can probably get it better at Costco."
35. Where do you want to be next year at this time?
Somewhere warmer! I don't think that will be the case, but it sure would be great.
36. Did you enjoy this year?
It was very uneventful, but kind of frustrating in a lot of ways, and I spent most of the year paralyzed by debt and fear of more debt, so I'll go with "it had its moments." I won't say enjoy exactly unless I can say that more good things happened to me than bad ones.
