WisCon 22?

Who is going?

Who can potentially recommend a more affordable hotel that's close by for a couple of people who cannot afford to rent a car & one of them is mobility-impaired (me, but due to air travel I will be using only a cane which makes me s l o w, unless the con rents wheelchairs). Or is this a terrible idea and we should just stay at the con hotel? Note that I am pathologically afraid of Uber and would want to be able to do this via walking or public transit.

I was nominated for funding assistance back in 2020 but 2020 happened. I'm considering whether I should ask for it again or not since the situation is substantially different and it is not as significant a need though it would still be a help (I just no longer will be able to bring the person whose appearance as my wheelchair-pusher if renting a manual was an option would be a big help but would also result in income loss).

I'm not 100% sure I'm going to make it but I'm trying very very hard to make it happen. A close friend of mine who isn't on DW would be coming with me and they have been to many WisCons, having been a UW Madison grad student.

Alas, I just canceled out last week so cannot help you. :/ I hope you find help!

ETA: Yes, the concom is aware that I've withdrawn; I just checked and I'm still listed as a GoH for WisCon 2022 but I don't think they've updated the site yet.

You're completely free to distribute that information; I'm sort of surprised nobody's updated the website yet but maybe the concom is trying to secure a replacement GoH before making the announcement?! I don't really have any insight here into what their decision-making process is.

You know, if travel becomes a thing again, I'd be happy to see you and your friend in NYC or some con as a civilian! I'd love to meet up for coffee or dinner or whatever your schedule permitted. :)

If y'all ever make it to Baton Rouge, please drop us a line! We can't host (unfortunately we don't have a guest room at this point in time, although that may change once Ara goes off to college) but we'd be pleased to take you around town and hang out.

P.S.

On the off (unlikely?) chance it factors into anyone else's decision calculus, I've Tweeted and DW'd the news, because having just checked WisCon's blog on their volunteer shortage, I don't really have faith that they're going to update their website anytime soon...

Um, how to put this kindly. The WisCon website probably hasn't been updated because there's a high probability the entire con will fold after this year: http://wiscon.net/2021/11/29/lets-save-wiscon/

I am hoping to go, but I'm not sure considering my work situation! I don't have any hotel recs, but I do have a friend in Madison who I will be staying with.
