So I had a visitor.
May. 13th, 2012 04:44 pmToday I'm at the spa, because it is Mother's Day and so spas can use all the help they can get, doing my reception gig while Brady does his massage gig and also doing my final paper (due tomorrow at noon). I had to take a personal phone call so I went outside because you can hear everything from the massage rooms.
Sat down on the stoop, which is a downward-facing one as the spa is in a basement.
( And had company the entire time, in the form of this guy: )
Not only did the bird stick around for my entire phone conversation, but he let me touch him. Seemed to be calmed by it, in fact. I was starting to get really worried, like, this looks like an adult bird and is letting me touch him. I'm trained in bird handling from having birds at the home my whole life (my parents and I are both parrot people and we had budgerigars this size) but that doesn't mean that wild birds just want me to touch them.
( Second picture: )
I just hung out and talked to him a little longer — due to the color of the sere I’m assuming a male; parrots are the only kind of birds I know how to properly guess at a sex — and pet him a few more times. He kept fluttering his wings like he was thinking about taking off, and nosed my hand once or twice in a “that actually feels kind of nice” sort of way.
Then a motorcycle went by, which obviously most birds wouldn’t like, and this one, like any other bird may have, took off.
I cheered him on (“Yay, good job, bird!”) and went back inside to do more schoolwork and pretend like I’m actually working reception (there is no reception to work right now; when there is I will work it), after washing my hands.
I’m guessing the local bird population just really isn’t enjoying TulipFest, which I can actually hear from here, and needed somewhere good to hang out.
Basically immediate ETA:
skywaterblue (who was very helpful and joined me in my concern for the bird's well-being) confirms that the bird is, in fact, male, and is also an indigo bunting.
