Year in review meme. Some of the questions thanks to
kate, 'cause I can never edit the ones I don't like myself to come up with better ones. I've seen multiple editions of this meme the last two years -- last year, I also found one I liked better, but I didn't manage to track it down again this year. But at least this typical one has been getting some modifications all around, as there are various different mostly identical sets of questions. Even
kate's original source was different to some of the ones I saw on my reading list, which is interesting! Meme evolution.
1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
2. What goals do you have for 2014?
Stay alive. And then actually live instead of just meeting the minimum standards for being considered alive. Anything on top of that is a bonus.
3. How did you spend New Year last year?
Snowed in from a Sirsy concert.
4. How will you spend it this year?
At my parents' because this year's Sirsy concert got canceled. We might go out to dinner.
5. How much traveling did you do in 2013?
Not as much as I've had liked, but definitely better than none at all! I went to Courtney and Kati's place in Toledo for a week.
6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013? Sanity, safety, trust. More comfortable time with my friends instead of the off-and-on close-and-uncertain that I've been feeling with just about everyone. More time to do things I actually enjoy (I know this will not be happening).
7. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory and why?
Hilariously, I don't remember the actual date. But the day we went and got the Vermonster and then went to the ICE COLD BEACH while Court and Hannah were here in May; I might've had a seizure and scared everyone and acted horribly and still feel terrible for my post-ictal behavior, but the rest of that day was fucking awesome.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting an A in a course that no one has gotten an A in in eight and a half years.
9. What was your biggest learning experience?
I honestly have no idea. I'm just staring at this one. Probably the time I spent at Four Winds.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
… Let's just leave this one at 'yes' and not elaborate.
11. What was the best thing you got, bought, pilfered, or stole?
What's the difference between pilfered and stole? Anyway: it was definitely my trollbeads bracelet, something I'd wanted for at least a decade. The bracelet itself, the lock and the first bead were my 25th birthday gift from my parents.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
This was a whole year ago now, and I actually end up crying hysterically when I look back on it more often than not because I remember how good I felt then compared to how rotten I feel now and how good things were then and etc etc, but Hannah and Courtney for what they did last January. No one has ever done anything so incredible for me, and I remember actually being sad January was over for the first time in my life! (This December has been as bad as most Januarys, if not worse, but that is all biological.)
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
So many people, but I will not name names. It is highly unlikely that you're on that list if you're reading this.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Bills and food.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Anytime I actually got to SEE friends. Mostly Zoey, Laura, Courtney, Hannah, because I didn't really see anyone else, but every time I get to actually be with someone who is important to me it makes a big difference. I don't have any local friends at all so it's actually a huge deal.
16. What song will always remind you of 2013?
Sirsy's Lionheart. Because of listening to it a lot and because that album dropped in March, though I first heard Lionheart last year or two years ago at a show.
17. Did you start any new hobbies?
I basically never do. Where's the time?
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Things that didn't make me miserable.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Things that did.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
I don't celebrate, but I can tell you I spent December 25th incredibly sick and mostly paralyzed from mid-back down. That's pretty memorable.
21. Did you fall in love in 2013?
Not really in love. I think I fell in love with, like, characters/writing things. (I definitely fell in love with Cathal/Zainab, there's something incredibly special lovable about that particular pair.)
22. Discover any new restaurants?
Ooooh. I can't … actually remember. I think so. But I'm not all that big on food, though I do use eating out as an excuse to go places and get out of the home. OH. WAIT. The Matchbox Cafe, which is in Rhinebeck and therefore isn't even remotely near where I live (an hour+ away), but it's on the way to places.
What were you watching on TV in 2013?
Elementary. Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares (UK version, so, yes, we were watching old episodes). Orange is the New Black. Planning on watching Sleepy Hollow when the season ends and I can watch it all in one go. I saw some of Breaking Bad, which I was also waiting for the end of to be able to watch straight through, and plan to keep watching it.
23. Any TV you've given up on?
I'm pretty sure it was last year I ditched Criminal Minds; no Prentiss, no me. Anything else I'm not still watching that I was a year ago is because it ended (Leverage D: D: D: D:)
24. Movie experiences of 2013 you'd like to remember?
I greatly enjoyed both Elysium and Pacific Rim. The experiences around seeing both were also pretty special, between having to madcap escape the theatre and run around in the garage after Elysium (we felt like we were in the movie, my dad started running) and our good conversation theatre-mates in Pacific Rim. That was it for me seeing movies this year. At least I didn't see anything I didn't like.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Oh my gosh, um, discovery? Like, someone new I had NEVER listened to before? I -- did that happen this year? It's entirely possible the answer is The Mowglis, but I'm not sure. I really think all the new music I enjoyed this year was from artists I already knew, that's so sad.
27. Any books to talk about?
Fortune's Pawn, but I can't actually put it into words. XO, but same thing. I'm great at loving books, atrocious at talking about them.
28. New games?
Flight Rising, though I've largely gotten bored of it because of how hard it is to do anything these days (which is the fault of players more than admins). And my entire family is now involved in the crusade to get me a DS. I assume these are the kinds of games we mean and not role-playing games.
29. What was your favourite film of this year?
Answering this question hurts me. I. Um. It. Was Elysium. (Still haven't seen Thor 2, and I absolutely adored PacRim, everything in it and everything it stood for, but Elysium's message is one of worldwide public health and it spoke to me so hard. Elysium isn't leading over Pacific Rim by very much at all, but it still hit me a little harder and the emotional response lasted much longer.)
30. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I continue to totally not care, though I appreciate the existence of Bill de Blasio and what he will probably do for my city.
31. What did you want and not get?
Peace and a B in math.
32. What political issue stirred you the most?
I stay out of that stuff. Always and forever. If I have an opinion you can guarantee you won't hear about it.
33. Any new fashion items for you?
Trollbeads. <3
34. Food memories of 2013?
I like this one better than the question that it was edited from, but it is still pretty hard to answer, since I tend to not care much about food itself. But basically every time we made food while in Toledo, there was a lot of love in that food. Even if the fudge came out grainy, some of the stuffed shells were undercooked, and it took us a century to find the miso paste. It was all worth it.
35. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
My parents visited and for the first time it wasn't a complete disaster, though it was far from good. (It didn't totally suck.) I was 25.
36. Who did you miss?
Everyone. Especially the two times I had to leave Courtney and Hannah/they had to leave me. Crying happened. I get to see them in 7 days, though. (Hopefully, at this point, because if the endometriosis keeps acting up at this scale i will not be able to travel and that is breaking my fucking heart into a million pieces.)
37. Who was the best new person you met?
Did I meet ANYONE new? I'm seriously not sure I did. Except professors. I think I'll give it to Bonnie Steinbock. (Google her if you're curious, 'cause I feel weird yammering.)
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013.
No, really, being honest and asking for help and knowing your limitations are good things.
39. Where do you want to be next year at this time?
On December 31st at 4:38pm? Surrounded by people I love. Hopefully meaning my actual nearest and dearest friends, all of whom are constantly far away.
40. Did you enjoy this year?
Not even a little. Many moments in January, February, March and May were pretty good, though, and that week in July. The rest of the year was completely atrocious.
1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
- A civil lawsuit. Dear lord do I not want to talk about it. I lost and it fucked up my entire life.
- Got kicked out of school for something that was entirely not my fault and wasn't even wrong except by draconian standards (see above).
- Changed career direction against my wishes and got into a prestigious, demanding research-based curriculum that is at least actually mentally stimulating and enjoyable even if it's not exactly what my desire for my life was. (Forget my dream job, that's something I will never be able to do even if I would be amazing at it; it's the steps to get there.)
- Inpatient mental health care as an adult.
2. What goals do you have for 2014?
